History

The legendary Chiu family is headed by Mr. Deacon Chiu, the influential and experienced entrepreneur. Born in Shanghai, Mr. Chiu arrived in Hong Kong in 1949 and ran his first business by opening a cinema in the rural area. In 1959, he started a small bank, Far East Bank, by collecting deposits from farmers. He then invested in numerous plots of land in the New Territories. In 1962, he expanded his business by acquiring Lai Chi Kok Amusement Park, a famous local theme park. In 1972, he founded Far East Consortium Limited and as Chairman, he was mainly involved in property development and investment. Mr. Chiu's exceptional competence and unusual flair in investment were evident in his takeover of Asia Television Limited (ATV) (formerly named as Rediffusion (Hong Kong) Limited), one of two free-to-air television broadcasters in Hong Kong. Despite the difficulty faced by ATV before him, Mr. Chiu successfully generated profit at the station by introducing a series of reforms. The Chiu regime at ATV was an important milestone in Hong Kong's TV history.
